E30 Mechanical Refurbishing – Timing, Tune Up & Suspension Refresh
At Meister Werks, our team takes great pride in saving the history of the legendary 325is E30. Recently, we finished a large mechanical job on this beautiful 1987 car which came into our shop with 133,256 miles. Because this model is a top classic, we focused on engine care and a full suspension fix to bring back its famous handling. This project was a labor of love that touched almost every major system of the vehicle.
Keeping the BMW M20 engine in good shape requires a lot of care and the right parts. Consequently, we did a full timing belt and water pump job to make sure this 325is E30 stays reliable. During this work, our team fixed several key items that people often miss on old cars.
Timing Belt and Tensioner: First, we put in a new timing belt kit and a tensioner. This is vital because a belt failure can cause the engine to break.
Water Pump and Cooling: Next, we replaced the water pump with a dual-outlet unit and added a fresh tensioner spring. We then flushed the system with new blue coolant.
Oil Seal Protection: Furthermore, our team put in a new camshaft seal and front main crankshaft seal. These parts stop oil from leaking and hitting the new timing belt.
Tune-Up and Ignition: We then did a full valve adjustment and a tune-up. This included a new distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, and a wire set with a new loom.
Smooth Drivetrain: To stop shakes in the 325is E30, we replaced the flex joint, also known as a Guibo. We also put in new manual transmission mounts to keep the shifting crisp.
Gearbox and Differential: Additionally, we changed the fluid in the manual gearbox. We also serviced the rear end with high-quality gear oil for better protection.
The 325is E30 needs a good suspension to handle fast turns with ease and comfort. Therefore, we rebuilt the front end with top parts to make the steering feel sharp and new again. You can see similar careful work in our Mk1 projects where a strong frame is always the main goal.
Bilstein B6 Shocks: We put in Bilstein B6 struts made for the M-Sport pack. These offer better control while keeping a comfortable ride on the street.
Strut Mount Kits: Along with the shocks, we put in new front strut mounts. These stop clunks and let the suspension move smoothly.
Control Arms and Bushings: Moreover, our team replaced both front control arms and their bushings. These parts remove play and keep the wheels in the right spot.
Tie Rods and Links: We also put in new steering tie rod ends and stabilizer bar links. This makes the steering feel direct and tight when you turn the wheel.
Laser Alignment: After the suspension work, we did a full 3D laser alignment. This makes sure the 325is E30 drives perfectly straight and protects your tires.
Fan Clutch and Belts: Finally, we put in a new fan clutch and new drive belts. This keeps the engine cool even on the hottest days.
While this 325is E30 is now much safer, our 30-point check found a few things to fix later. Specifically, we suggest planning for these repairs soon to keep this BMW in top mechanical shape.
Brake System Fix: First, the front brakes and rotors need to be replaced. We also saw that the old rubber hoses are starting to crack and leak.
Electrical Wires: Next, the ABS wire harness is old and falling apart. It will need new wires and sensors soon to get the safety system working right.
Rear Wheel Bearings: Then, the rear wheel bearings are starting to make a loud noise. They need to be changed before they cause more damage to the car.
Mounts and Shocks: In addition, the engine mounts are starting to sink and collapse. We also noted that the rear shocks are starting to feel soft and bouncy.
Small Details: Finally, the right window motor does not work at all. The washer bottle is also cracked and unable to hold any cleaning fluid.
Ultimately, we are happy to help Zach keep this piece of history on the road. By using modern tools and old-school skill, we make sure these cars stay ready for the drive. We look forward to seeing this 325is E30 out on the streets of the Pacific Northwest soon.
