Restoring a Legend: The Porsche 356b Mechanical Overhaul
Our team at Meister Werks is currently hard at work on a comprehensive mechanical and electrical restoration for a classic 1963 Porsche 356B Coupe. This project focuses on modernizing the vehicle’s systems while preserving its legendary performance. Consequently, we are systematically addressing every major system from the electrical grid to the drivetrain.
12V Electrical System Overhaul
A primary goal for this build is a full electrical overhaul and conversion to a 12V system. This upgrade ensures better reliability and easier starting for the vintage coupe.
-
Power Generation: We are installing a genuine 12v Bosch generator and a matching 12v voltage regulator.
-
Starting Power: The team is replacing the old unit with a high-quality 12v starter motor.
-
Ignition and Monitoring: We are integrating a new genuine Porsche ignition switch and a VDO gauge sensor kit, which includes a GPS speed module and oil pressure sensors.
Engine and Fuel System Mechanicals
To ensure the air-cooled engine runs at peak performance, we are performing a thorough mechanical overhaul. We prioritize using genuine Porsche and OES parts to maintain the car’s authenticity.
-
Sealing the Bay: Our technicians are replacing all engine compartment seals, including the rear upper, front lower, and side seals, to ensure a perfect fit against the body.
-
Fuel Delivery: We are completely rebuilding the fuel system with a new fuel tank, fuel petcock assembly, and a fresh sending unit for the gauge.
-
Hardware Refresh: Every detail matters, so we are using genuine yellow zinc carburetor bolts and washers during the reassembly.
Transmission, Clutch, and Exhaust
Smooth power delivery is essential for the 356B driving experience. Therefore, we are refreshing the entire drivetrain and exhaust path.
-
Clutch and Flywheel: The overhaul includes a new 200mm flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing.
-
Drivetrain Seals: We are installing new main shaft and drive axle shaft seals to prevent any leaks from the gearbox.
-
Exhaust and Heating: A complete exhaust and muffler kit is being installed, which includes new heater pipes and polished tips that exit through the bumper.
Suspension, Steering, and Braking
Finally, we are addressing the chassis to ensure this Porsche handles as the factory intended.
-
Suspension Dampening: We are upgrading the ride with Bilstein shocks for both the front and rear, including all new bushings.
-
Chassis Tightness: The project includes new rear torsion bar bushings, stabilizer bar bushings, and an anti-camber bar center pivot.
-
Steering and Parking Brake: To sharpen the steering, we are installing complete left and right tie rod assemblies and a new steering coupler. Furthermore, we are replacing the parking brake control cables and rear relay cables to ensure the safety system is fully functional.
Every step of this 1963 Porsche 356B Coupe restoration is documented through our digital shop system. This allows us to share the progress of this mechanical transformation with the owner in real-time.
