At Meister Werks European, we recently had the honor of servicing a true automotive icon: a 1971 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda. The Importance of Specialized Diagnostics
We began our process with a 30pt Courtesy Inspection and a specialized Factory Mercedes Service Inspection. Older European cars have unique mechanical systems that require a trained eye. During this phase, we uncovered several hidden dangers that the owner needed to address immediately.
Correcting Major Braking Issues
Braking safety is our top priority at Meister Werks. We found that the brake master cylinder was leaking and heavily corroded. A failing master cylinder can lead to total brake failure, so we replaced it with a Genuine Mercedes-Benz unit.
While inspecting the rear of the vehicle, our technicians made a startling discovery. A previous shop had installed the parking drum brakes backwards. This error caused the shoes to wear unevenly and damaged the inside the parking brake drums, which are inside the rear brake rotors. We corrected this by installing a new parking brake shoe kit and zinc coated, high-carbon rear rotors.
Furthermore, we noticed the brake calipers were leaking. We sourced Genuine OES ATE disc brake calipers to ensure the vehicle regained its original stopping power. To finish the system, we performed a full brake fluid flush using Liqui Moly DOT4 fluid to ensure no air or moisture remained in the lines.
Critical Suspension and Transmission Repairs
Safety concerns extended beyond the brakes. We found a broken rear left shock bolt. This meant the lower shock was not mechanically attached to the suspension—a very dangerous condition. Our team successfully extracted the broken bolt and installed a high-grade Genuine MB suspension shock bolt to secure the ride.
The owner also reported trouble with the transmission. The vehicle would not stay in “Park” and actually tried to move while the selector was in the P position. This required a complex Transmission Park Gear Adjustment. We addressed multiple shift linkage issues and a worn parking gear push pin to make the vehicle safe to park again.
