Founder, Alfieri Maserati

A Century of the Trident: The Maserati Timeline

Maserati’s story is one of family, speed, and Italian resilience. Below is the journey of how a small workshop in Bologna became a global symbol of automotive excellence.

1900s – 1920s: From Family Passion to World Records

The foundation was laid by Rodolfo Maserati. His seven children also shared a deep obsession with precision engineering. By 1914, brothers Alfieri, Ettore, and Ernesto opened their first workshop in Bologna. While World War I tested their technical skills, it only strengthened their resolve.

In 1926, they produced their first original car, the Tipo 26. This was the first to wear the iconic Trident logo. The brand quickly proved its power in 1929 when the 16-cylinder V4 set a world speed record of 246 km/h, a mark that remained unbeaten for nearly a decade.

1930s – 1940s: Global Glory and Daily Drivers

In late 1930s marked a major transition as Adolfo Orsi took the helm. He moved the factory to its current home in Modena. During this era, Maserati dominated the world stage in auto racing.  They won the Indianapolis 500 two years in a row, 1939 and 1940.

After World War II, the brand shifted its focus toward the public. In 1947, they released the A6 1500. Designed by Pininfarina, this was the first Maserati built for daily enjoyment rather than just the racetrack, marking the birth of their grand touring philosophy.

1950s – 1970s: The Icons of La Dolce Vita

The 1950s were a golden age for the brand. In 1957, Juan Manuel Fangio secured his fifth Formula One world title behind. Racing behind the wheel of a 250 F. That same year, the 3500 GT debuted. Scaling production, they meet a global thirst for luxury grand tourers.

Innovation continued through the 1960s and 70s with the creation of new categories:

  • The Luxury Sedan: In 1963, the Quattroporte debuted as the world’s first luxury sports sedan.

  • Masterpiece Design: The Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Ghibli and the mid-engined Bora redefined what an Italian supercar could look like.

1980s – 1990s: Power and Partnerships

In the 1980s, the Biturbo brought extreme twin-turbocharged power to a wider audience. Furthermore, the Quattroporte III became the official choice for the President of Italy.

The 1990s saw an “unthinkable” move as longtime rivals Maserati and Ferrari joined forces. This partnership led to the creation of the 3200 GT. This was a Ferrari-powered coupe that paved the way for Maserati’s triumphant return to the United States market.

2000s – Present: The Modern Era of Innovation

Since the turn of the century, Maserati has focused on growth and diversification while staying true to its racing roots.

  • Design Excellence: New generations of the Quattroporte and the Pininfarina-designed GranTurismo reminded the world of the brand’s elegance.

  • Modern Expansion: In 2013, a redesigned Ghibli captured the mid-sized luxury market, followed closely by the Levante, the brand’s first high-performance SUV.

  • Centennial Celebration: In 2014, the brand celebrated 100 years of history by unveiling the Alfieri concept car, a tribute to the founding brother’s vision.

Ultimately, whether on the track or the open road, the Trident represents a unique blend of performance and soul. This is the passion, only the Maserati family could create.
